Travel Photography Gear

When it comes to travel photography, packing light while ensuring you have all the essential gear can be a challenge. Over the years, I've refined my travel photography kit to include only the most versatile and reliable equipment. Here's a detailed look at the gear I bring on my travels, why I chose each piece, and some tips for packing light.

Sony A7II

The Sony A7II is my favorite camera for travel photography. Its compact size and full-frame sensor make it ideal for capturing high-quality images without the bulk. The (discontinued) in-body apps you can download from the Sony website make it a spectacular powerhouse for all shooting styles.

I rely on the Tamron 28-200mm lens for its incredible versatility. This lens covers a wide range of focal lengths, allowing me to shoot everything from wide landscapes and nightscapes to detailed portraits and wildlife shots. Its relatively lightweight and compact size makes it a perfect travel companion, eliminating the need for multiple prime lenses.

ND and CPL Filters

Variable Neutral Density (ND) and Circular Polarizing (CPL) filters are essential for managing light and enhancing colors. My ND filter helps me capture long-exposure shots even in bright conditions, creating beautiful motion blur effects in waterfalls or waves. The CPL filter reduces glare and enhances the saturation of skies and foliage, making my landscape shots pop.

Lightweight Tripod

A sturdy yet lightweight tripod is crucial for stability during long exposures and night photography. I opted for a compact model that can easily fit into my backpack’s water bottle pocket. This allows me to set up steady shots without adding significant weight to my pack.

Peak Design Capture Clip

My Peak Design Capture Camera Clip enables swift and secure camera attachment to my backpack strap, ensuring quick access. It’s also ultra-compatible with any arca-swiss mounting hardware like my tripod. Its sleek design and lightweight build seamlessly integrate into my minimalist travel setup.

Camera L-Bracket

An L-bracket provides a quick and convenient way to switch between landscape and portrait orientation while maintaining balance and stability. Its durable construction ensures reliable support for my camera body during extended shooting sessions. This was a small but crucial addition to my setup since I often shoot in both orientations on my tripod.

Lens Pen Cleaning System

Keeping my lens clean is essential for capturing sharp and clear images. My lens pen cleaning system offers a compact and effective solution for removing dust, fingerprints, and smudges from my lens elements, ensuring optimal image quality wherever my travels take me.
