Doughnut Diary

One of my favorite things to do while traveling is to visit doughnut shops in cities and towns I pass through.

Here is a brief ranking of my top picks & what to get:

1. World's Best Donuts, Grand Marais, MN.

Try their Donut Kabob

2. Grebe's Bakery, West Allis, WI

Try their maple syrup Long John

3. Sedonuts, Sedona, AZ

Try their bear claw

4. Milkbomb, Berkeley, CA

Try one of their donut ice cream sandwiches

5. Bob's Donuts, San Francisco, CA

Try their apple fritter

6. Do-Rite Donuts, Chicago, IL

Try their old-fashioned

7. Smith's Bakery, Bakersfield, CA

Try their cherry-glazed doughnut

8. Donut Hut, Burbank, CA

Try their old-fashioned

Among these delicious doughnut shops, there are some honorable mentions. These places, while enjoyable, may not be as local, small, or exceptional but reliably serve good doughnuts. They include shops like Krispy Kreme, Pick-N-Save, and Vons.

For me, waking up early and standing in line for doughnuts is a testament to my love for these glazed delicacies.

I had heard from a local about the unique way World's Best Donuts sells doughnuts in the town of Grand Marais. They continue selling doughnuts until they run out, so I set my alarm for 6:30 AM after spending the night in a nearby parking lot, eager to try the beloved Donut Kabob.

Similarly, at Sedonuts, I faced the challenge of choosing from remaining doughnut options since I arrived at noon when many flavors had already sold out. On the other hand, Grebe's doughnuts which are also sold at Speedways, became an after-work treat on occasion for me. These stores receive a fresh batch every night around midnight.

Without a doubt, my favorite way to gauge a city or town is by its doughnut shops. While I haven't visited as many unique doughnut shops as I could during my travels, I've made an effort to explore new ones in more recent trips.
